Sleep is one of the most important pillars of a healthy life. It is during sleep that our immune system gets repaired, our hormones are regulated, and memories are consolidated. Sleep deprivation may not be as instantly lethal as sleep apnea, but it can affect your health in significant ways:

But how much sleep do we actually need? Most adults need about 8 hours of sleep every night to function at their peak. Children and teenagers also require about 8 hours per night but they also tend to fall asleep more easily than adults. The main difference between them and adults is that they take naps in the afternoon.


Sleep is a complex behavior. Sleep is regulated by a set of related brain chemicals, the most important of which is called "neurotransmitters." Scientists have been able to manipulate the levels of these neurotransmitters in animals to make them sleep more or less.
